Frontier model
Also: frontier models, frontier AI
A model near the leading edge of current AI skills. Which model leads depends on the task and the date.
The fuller definition
A frontier model is one of the most capable models available at a given time, usually from a major developer and usually accessed through a cloud service.
Multiple-choice questions, general knowledge, clean text, scored automatically.
Scanned letters, conditional dates, two conflicting sources, scored by a lawyer.
The first number is real for the test it describes. It is not a prediction of the second. Run a small test on your own material before treating a headline score as evidence.
A concrete example
The newest large models from Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google are described as frontier models. Smaller open-weight models usually are not.
The distinction that matters
Frontier describes relative capability at a moment. It is not a stable product tier, and it says nothing about data handling.
